First of all, the canonization process of the Church is extensive and takes many years. Part of that process is the psychology of the person in question. The Catholic Church raised Gemma to the altar of Saints, and would have not done so, if there were a shred of doubt concerning her mental condition.

I am new here Glenn, as St. Gemma made herself known to me about a week ago. I have been pouring over the info you have here, and wanted to thank you so much for the time and efforts in what I know is a labor of love for you, and a joy for those of us you have blessed here.

RichardRichardhttp://www.poetrypoem.com/richcarltonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055912381407477995.post-17907065772597383332011-07-20T19:38:54.296-04:002011-07-20T19:38:54.296-04:00Regarding that comment by Anonymous
God created ...Regarding that comment by Anonymous

God created heaven and earth by a word. He said "Let there be light" and there was light. But God could have said "Let there be salvation". Why didn't he do that !! He sent his only son to suffer and die for us. His whole life (not just the passion) was full of suffering and misunderstanding -- e.g., A prophet is never accepted in his hometown. Jesus felt hurt!! When the Son of God suffered it means real suffering. He suffered physical, emotional, and mental pain. That is why suffering is called a "Mystery". We people with our small brains cannot understand the actions of a mighty God. This Saint suffered so much for the salvation of souls and you are calling her a psychological wreck. Then what do you call yourself? A "spiritual wreck" I suppose. It is not necessary to understand God. We must love him more.
P. When I was little I was so tired of the world and I loved God, I loved Jesus, I loved the idea of being a nun. I prayed all the time, and said the rosary when I could. I did not know it fully. I just knew that everything concerning God was important to me and my soul. I was like Gemma. I believe the virgin Mary would throw rosaries at me at certain times. One would appear on the floor in a church, in the elevator of one I was visiting, on the street again in another location. So Gemma was not crazy. She was crazy with love. Blood is expected for atonement, suffering is expected, and sacrifice is expected. I notice that the closer I want to be with the Lord the more others want to persecute, belittle, bully and slander me and mock things of God. I also agree that the reason I left the church because I saw things in the Catholic church which disturbed my soul. I was only 11 or 12 but I knew certain things were not right. The first was selection of only choir boys under priests. The second was that no one can absolve you of your sins except God. No one - not your mother, not your father and not a priest. The third were the many objects that were being kneeled to. Some of those relics were stolen and did not belong in certain churches. Anyway...I still love the Lord and I have raised my three children in the admonition of the Lord. Do not mock a child when they want to love on the Lord. Do not put them down and turn them away from God. That is dangerous for your soul. Continue to love the Lord Jesus and his father and beautiful mother Mary. God Bless...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055912381407477995.post-91857426512977454382010-11-09T03:06:43.215-05:002010-11-09T03:06:43.215-05:00Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for your comments.
Obviously...Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for your comments.

Obviously I can't comment concerning the situation with your sister, but I would like to make a reply to your commentary about St Gemma, and how it is your opinion that God would not call anyone to suffer for others. Specificly you said:
"God nor Jesus WOULD EVER ASK THIS OF ANYONE, or want this for you in your life. This is not what they do. GOD AND JESUS support life not this kind of behavior."

Why then, would you say, did Jesus become man and suffer and die a horrible death on a Cross? If God only "supports life and not this kind of behavior" as you say, then why did He become man, allow Himself to be mocked, whipped, scourged, made to carry a cross, be nailed to it, and then hang upon it for three long hours until His death?

May God be with you,
Glenn DallaireGlenn Dallairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14335880223972671663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055912381407477995.post-61466242487732723422010-11-08T22:55:39.092-05:002010-11-08T22:55:39.092-05:00I think other things might have been going on here...I think other things might have been going on here. Abuse, escapisim, and mental problems..I am sorry to say this, but I have a sister who has caused ME great pain in my life, MY WHOLE LIFE...I am happy to be alive, she wants to die and never be alive in the world. She causes a lot of people great grief, and gives no explanation...for her misery, but make an excuse like this, because she won't take medicind which could turn her life AROUND! This is her, and a great excuse for attention. So very sad for this, and to make her a saint...God nor Jesus WOULD EVER ASK THIS OF ANYONE, or want this for you in your life. This is not what they do. GOD AND JESUS support life not this kind of behavior. You should be ashamed of this. This girl was very sick phycologically and needed help when it was not available in society during this time. This is a very sad thing. Bless this girl. I know that Father Enrico Zoffoli does not talk about this photograph at all in the section of his hagigography "La Povera Gemma" where he discusses all the photographs of St Gemma.
You can read his commentary on the photographs here:
Padre Enrico Zoffolis commentary on the St Gemma photographs

So, I would have to conclude that it is probaly not authentic, however to see if we can get any further info about this photo I just emailed the Postulator General in Rome to see if he might be able to shed any light upon this particular photo.
